A Fallen World: The Collapse of the United States of America

The United States of America, going into 2020, was internationally considered to be a stable democracy. However, 2020 was a year of horrid misfortune, starting with the discovery of a new virus, SAR-CoV-2, and the illness it caused, COVID-19, in Wuhan, China. The virus itself was eventually found to be part of an experimental Chinese Chemical Weapons program deployed in World War Three. The year, as it happened, was an election year. By June, Joseph Biden, the vice President under Barack Obama, secured the nomination of the Democratic Party, while the Republican Party nominated the incumbent President, Donald J. Trump. When election day came that November, a panic fell across the United States.

The "swing states" in the election where broadly defined to have been Arizona, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Nebraska's Second District, Maine's Second District, Ohio, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Michigan. No one suspected a combination that resulted in a tie in the electoral college. (Biden won the popular vote by about 750, 000 votes). The House of Representatives made the election too close to call. Despite the pleas of both Biden and Trump, rioting broke out. California threatened to leave the United States all together if Trump was re-elected.

When January 3rd came, the slight Republican majority in the House of Representatives re-elected Donald J. Trump in the first election that went to the House since 1824. California fulfilled her promise. As Gavin Newsom was sworn in as President of the Bear Flag Republic, Trump declared California 'an area in rebellion' and deployed the Army. Soon, a shooting war broke out. Initially, the US only could make gains in the Central Valley and the North, but in March California ran out of ammunition. Newsom, in a new capitol in San Francisco, was executed as a traitor when the US Army reached the city on March 7th, 2021. The backlash to this was major. Trump fled from DC to an emergency capitol in Charleston, West Virginia as the city, as well as Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia formed the Commonwealth of the Chesapeake. New England and New York formed their own countries. Congress, now full of mostly Republicans, granted Puerto Rico and various US territories independence, and called upon NATO for help. NATO was going through rough times in Europe, and Canada was the only help available. The Canadian Army captured Buffalo and Detroit, but unrest was rising in Alberta, British Columbia, and Quebec, and Canadian troops had to pull out of the war.

The US Government died when Donald Trump was assassinated in the church in West Virginia. Congress split the remains of the US into provisional states. However, the provisional states didn't last long. Washington, Oregon, and British Colombia came together to form Cascadia. California took part of southern Arizona and Nevada into the Bear Flag Republic, revived under Nancy Pelosi's leadership. Mitt Romney took Northern Arizona, Western Nevada, Idaho, Utah, and part of Wyoming into the Republic of Deseret. Texas took New Mexico, Colorado, and all of her old territories under the First Republic of Texas and formed the Second Republic of Texas. Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Kentucky formed the Republic of Dixie. The Great Plains and the Carolinas also unified. Two governments laid claim to the Great Lakes States (Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Indianapolis, and Ohio), the Republic of and the People's Republic of the Great Lakes. The US was gone and over with, and the world was no better.
